RFID

Rielec is a forerunner in the design and manufacture of storage and RFID remote data recovery systems. (RFID is an acronym for Radio Frequency Identification).

What are RFID systems?

The main purpose of RFID technology is transmitting an object´s identity (like a unique serial number) using radio waves; this is carried out using RFID tags.

The RFID tags are small devices resembling labels which may be attached to or inserted into a product, animal or person. They contain antennas to allow them to receive and respond to radio frequency requests from a RFID transmitter-receiver. The passive tags do not require an internal power supply. One of the advantages of using radio frequency (as opposed to bar codes, for example) is that direct vision between the transmitter and receiver is not required.

RFID tags are commonly used commercially to track pallets and containers, trucks and transporter trailers or in hospital uniform distribution systems or even in clothes.

RFID system applications can be used for the following:

  • Intelligent identification of products, merchandise or people.
  • Recording data and events during transport or processing.
  • Sharing recorded data with enterprise management, ERP, WMS, MES etc.
  • Sharing mutually relevant data with third parties and other members in the enterprise via EDI, SVC, SOAP etc.

Currently, logistics is the most important RFID Spain application and it is here where Rielec is most active. This technology allows any product to be located within the supply chain. In terms of traceability, the tags have a much more extensive use since they can be recorded, so that the period of time the product has been stored can be determined and their location etc. This allows important optimizations in product handling in supply chains with the same base product and practically becoming independent of the information system.

RFID systems in the future in Spain and Internationally.

RFID systems are seen as an alternative to bar codes given the significant number of advantages that they have over the antiquated bar code technology. Bar codes, however, may never be completed replaced due in part to the relatively high costs involved. For some lower cost items, the capacity of each individual tag may be considered excessive although it would offer some advantages such as making stock taking run more smoothly and effectively.

RFID codes are so long that each RFID tag must have a unique code whilst the current bar codes are limited to one single code for all items of a particular product. The uniqueness of the RFID tags means that a product can be traced individually whilst in transit, until reaching the hands of the consumer, helping companies to combat theft and other forms of product loss. In addition, it has been suggested that RFID be used as a stock check from the point of sale and so providing an automated system for the sales assistant that does not require bar code scanning.

Rielec conducts personalized studies based on the individual needs of the company, application, situation etc. Currently Rielec, together with The University of Alicante and other companies, is developing a research and development project for the manufacture of autonomous pallet trucks. The main advantage of this type of autonomous robot is that it is capable of operating throughout the factory unassisted. In addition, it has a mapping and localization system (SLAM) and a self-learning system designed by the University of Alicante which allows the autonomous vehicle to operate irrespective of the surroundings.
